Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a very popular topic today on the web. Everyone is looking for an easy way to make it to the top. With search engines becoming more and more popular as a way to find and access content, making sure your website appears on the first page of results is more important than ever.
Despite the popularity of the topic (and the obvious business importance), there are many widespread SEO myths. In this short series, we'll take a look at 5 of the most common.
The Myth: The Magic Formula
There is a magic SEO formula, and if we just get that right, we'll be guaranteed to make it to the top.
The Reality
Unfortunately, this myth inspires hope that by following a few simple rules, we'll be able to get our site to the top of the search engines. But this simplistic idea forgets two important key factors - the complexity of search algorithms and the pressure of competition.
First, the complexity of search engine algorithms has grown and promises to continue growing. Google's secret algorithm reportedly analyzes over 200 factors when ranking websites. Plus, there's no telling when they will change something. Google is constantly evolving the algorithm, adapting to the trickery of spam websites and striving to find the best, most relevant content. Even if there was a magic formula that cracked these 200 factors, it would probably be irrelevant within a few weeks.
Second, competition on the web is usually intense. It's always important to remember that, whatever you're trying to do to increase your rank, there are probably at least 10 other competitors doing the same thing. Unless you operate in a very narrow niche with low competition, you can expect that such competition will only grow over time.
So, unfortunately, there is no magic formula. The reality is that both the search engine algorithms and the competitive landscape is constantly evolving, and our SEO strategy needs to take these factors into account.
This myth is particularly dangerous because many shady "SEO experts" try to sell their services by promising to "get you to the top of Google." Here's an SEO rule of thumb - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Any SEO snake oil salesman who promises quick results without very much effort (other than a sizable monthly check) is pulling a fast one. In the real world, getting solid SEO results requires consistent effort and hard work to create, update, and maintain quality content. There are no good shortcuts to success in this field.
